- Breakenridge is a really solid addition to the team.
- There is a lot of content coming out of Alberta that is relevant to the country or at least neighboring provinces so I'm looking fwd to this.
- Will Rob cover stories out of Sask & Mb too?
- I know The Line is mostly political, but there are energy and indigenous issues with political overtones worth covering. It's not all about Smith and the UCP.
- Balance is important. Don't want to end up like the Alberta Report.
Rob will cover the stories that catch his attention and that fit well under the Alberta umbrella, but we aren't going to turn the Alberta gig into a generic "western Canada" gig. Lot of stories to tell and we'll find ways to tell them locally. Just going to take some time! We just launched the first one! Let me get it running first before I worry about the rest of the federation!
LOL I doubt very highly that Jen and Rob will produce anything like Alberta Report back in the day (I assume that's what your referring to) as I don't think either are Byfield acolytes.
Colby Cosh out of Edmonton used to work for AR and the Byfields, and he could likely opine as to the vast differences between the Byfield Family output and Jen & Rob. Not that I'm slamming the Byfields - they were definitely of the VERY social conservative wing of the right, but Alberta Report did have some great reporting and commentary back in the day, and Ted certainly did a lot of work on his historical books, which are worth a read.
I thought perhaps Colby Cosh might join up with The Line as well at some point - perhaps, if the NP folds up for good after Carney cuts the media subsidies to pay for his regional economic development program....errrr.....increases to Canada's defence spending.
Great addition to the team. Welcome to Rob! I've been a listener and reader of his work for many years. I'm looking forward to Rob unfettered from any legacy media shackles.
30 years? Where does the time go?. My son is now 14 and we used to put him to bed as a toddler with a combination of Andreas Bocelli and Rob Breckenridge on QR. He was too good for Corus. Welcome to Breck, and congratulations to The Line!
Welcome Rob and thank you for focusing in on Alberta, as someone in media needs to do this in good faith. Seems like most of our current options are CBC ('nuf said) and whatever right-wing Alberta media takes issue with CBC. So I'm looking forward to a fresh wind from The Line.
So ...... that's TWO people based in Alberta. Wowsers! Zowie!
That means that we are more important than Ontariowe? Nope, didn't think so.
In any event, welcome to Rob Breakenridge. I have read him in the Calgary Herald for many years; agreed with some things and not with others: as it should be, really. But, he typically had something to add to the discussion, even if I disagreed with his conclusion.
I listened to Rob only occasionally: when I was in the car - but only when I was alone so I could turn the sound up to MAX. And, again, some yesses and some nos; again, as it should be.
Congratulations on the new annoucement. I look forward to more province-specific versions of the Line. I feel my province is often overlooked by the national media and would welcome a province-specific version of where I live.
I welcome this provincial bureau approach to The Line - for the most part.
Because of our country's vastness, Canadians really know little about the country's regions outside of their own local and provincial familiarity. This can lead us to all view the ROC outside our pieces of it rather myopically.
I've learned a lot about Southern Ontario / Toronto /! Ottawa issues from Matt's perspective, as I'm guessing subscribers from Matt's part of the country learn about Alberta issues from Jen. That's a good thing - a way to understand a place we are less or even unfamiliar with better leads to a greater sense of unity, something Canada desperately needs.
I hope in The Line's expansion to a provincial bureau model, we don't lose some of the Canadian Cultural Cross-pollination that the Line provides. That would be a lost opportunity.
Line Subscribers: make sure you KEEP your main Line subscription and not retreat into your own 'Sub Lines'. In fact, subscribe to all The Lines!
The preceding paragraph is (I'd suppose) approved by Matt & Jen, their financial advisors, and their progeny.
The honest answer is — and don’t hate me Albertans — Alberta was one of three places I was open to starting this, and it ended up being first simply because Rob became available.
Because the centre of the universe is shifting! The west has had enough and is ready to take its rightful seat at the table. And all it wants is what every province wants and should have to be part of this beautiful confederation. We can only go up from here!
Nice to have Rob Breckenridge added to the mix. I enjoyed his insights on QR770 and found him a thoughtful alternative to some of the more reactionary hosts. He could pick through the noise and rumble of guests and callers and get to the meat of any matter. Congrats to The Line and to Rob.
Big fat loud Congratulation to The Line on the expansion !

I thought the Western Standard was the spiritual heir of Alberta Report. Derek Fildebrandt certainly moves in that direction.
I've not read the Western Standard enough to agree or disagree.
You should check it out. Every non-subsidized media outlet in Canada deserves at least a chance.
Woohoo! Now we get twice the value for our money.
Oh and more angry Jen please.
. I’ve always held Rob in very high regard. Excellent addition.
Looking forward to The Line: Alberta!
Makes sense. Alberta is where all the kool kids like me hang out

Excellent.
Well!

All in all a good expansion.

Oh, I should note I live in Toronto.
Working on that.
You’re ‘aving a larf! ALL the news is Toronto-centric.
Agreed — “Toronto” does not very often equal “Ontario”… says he from the far eastern extremities of the GTA. ;-))

Congrats and looking forward to Rob's columns.
The Hub also launched an Alberta stream. What makes the province so worthy?

Ah, if only it was that simple, Karmen.
We have to keep bashing our head against the wall of Laurentian whatever.

A wonderful addition to a great team. 👏
Rob Breakenridge is a pro and I remember him when he was first starting out at CHED. Solid addition to The Line team, congrats on this growth!
