How bad of a tactical mistake was it for everyone who has been demanding he ‘resign’ up until today, who then realised that they should have just kept on the ‘we want an election’ wagon all along?
What happens if government falls on the throne speech returning from prorogation, before they can vote on supply? Would government be out of money until an election is held and the next government can vote?
I have in the back of my mind a scenario where after prorogation ends the new liberal leader (or Trudeau still!) strong-arms Jagmeet Singh into supporting the throne speech and supply to avoid a shutdown, buying more time, then potentially proroguing again or just ending the session early to drag this through to the fall.
I had the same thought that Trudeau will still be the leader. Today Trudeau's exact words were that he "intends" to resign. He's not gone till he is gone.
The Liberal do NOTHING quickly so the prospect of them getting themselves organized to select another leader in a very short timeframe will be something stellar to watch.
The Government can use 'special warrants' to fund itself during an election period because Parliament is officially 'dissolved.' Note that special warrants cannot be used during prorogation.
I mean, my first thought was "I wonder how easy it'll be for people just angry at the Liberal party to hijack the leadership process?". Boaty Mcboatface for Liberal leader? I'm there for it!
Love these :) my question is: do you think there is a significant amount of people that were voting conservative as a protest against Trudeau, who would now vote liberal under a different leader, or is the overall liberal brand too damaged?
What do we think the likelihood of single issue ‘crazies’ getting in the race is? If the liberals keep the supporter class for voting in leadership races could we see a scenario where the Hamas tankies or pro Russian trolls field a candidate to ‘talk about the issues’ and throw the race into chaos?
How about Elon Musk declaring his candidacy for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada and putting the call out to MAGA twitter to register as supporters? (He is a Canadian citizen after all and he's definitely into politics these days.)
Jen said she's a chaos demon... how's that for chaos?
What are the 7 federal super safe definite Liberal ridings/MP’s that Matt mentioned as the Lib bare minimum safe seats on Friday’s podcast?
Also, in each of your opinions, who of the current Liberal leader prospects (Freeland, Carney, Joly, LeBlanc, Champagne, Anand, Clark) are least likely to win against the Conservatives in the federal general election (or most likely to lose the worst)?
Is this Trudeau playing chicken with his caucus? “Hey guys, you only got to the end of March to find the best leader to give Canadians a real choice in the next election while Trump levies tariffs… oh, look i’m the best choice.” The dude didn’t actually step down.
The fact that we are here at this moment speaks to the complete failure of the Liberal party. The fact that the caucus and backbench of the party had no ability to see the forest for the trees, and that nobody cared enough to stop the insanity when the Liberal constitution was updated. One small cut after another, and now you see all these grown adults bleeding out in real time. Unbelievable failure of an institution.
Why isn't this the main story in the news?
Honestly, why isn't this the main story all over the news?
Please tell me that when March 24 comes there must be a throne speech that is a confidence motion. If defeated (as it should be) we do immediately to an election 37-52 days?)
Can a “new” prime minister re-prorogue parliament? Before a throne speech?
How does this play out ? A new liberal leader will have zero days in parliament before and an election . And our country will not have had parliament since Dec 20 till end of march plus 1-2 months for an election ???? W T. F!!!
Sliding this in before 8 pm filing deadline!: can we take a moment to consider the role of the PMO handlers in this debacle/chaos? Given pared down Cabinet, and high stakes negotiations ahead, are the very same handlers (Chief of Staff) going to be advising and messaging in this interregnum? Don’t they get to be held accountable someway, somehow? The very ones who must have tried to message out of the mounting challenges since 2022…?
Throughout the day since Trudeau’s announcement I have heard remarks by Liberal caucus members stating they are the best party to govern. They have suggested the Conservative Party has no way forward for governing. Contrary to this thought, I listened to Jordan Peterson’s interview of Pollieve which was lengthy enough to get beyond sound bites and seemed to have some thoughtful plans on boosting our economy and improving the lives of Canadians. I would appreciate your thoughts regarding this interview.
1. With both Singh and Blanchet coming out today promising to vote down the government at the first opportunity (likely late March), if you were a first tier potential leadership candidate (Carney, Freeland, Joly, Anand) would you toss your hat in the ring now (with the risk of getting blown out of the water in May) or keep your head warm until a post-election race (with the risk there might not be one)?
2. What, if anything, do you think it would take to inveigle Singh into supporting a new Liberal leader to get through the supply vote in late March. Formal coalition with Deputy PM and a couple of cabinet seats? Promising to support a bill to change the voting system before the next election? A shiny new Rolex?
3. Do you see any scenario under which a new leader tries to secure NDP support to move the election back by a year, which is legally and constitutionally possible, to give them time to establish themselves. “In the national interest” of course.
If the LPC asked you to moderate a debate, what would your top 3 questions be?
I'll give it a go:
1) How will you change the approach to climate change ie. the carbon tax?
2) How will the immigration policy change under your leadership?
3) How will you solve the housing crisis?
Ooooh that's a good one.
How bad of a tactical mistake was it for everyone who has been demanding he ‘resign’ up until today, who then realised that they should have just kept on the ‘we want an election’ wagon all along?
Hey guys, any chance this will be recorded?
Cheers.
Yes, as soon as the YouTube livestream ends, it is archived there as a standard YouTube video.
Thanks, hope y'all have some strong beverages prepared...

Question - What are your thoughts on the possibility that special interest groups hijack the leadership contest?
I mean, my first thought was "I wonder how easy it'll be for people just angry at the Liberal party to hijack the leadership process?". Boaty Mcboatface for Liberal leader? I'm there for it!
Since my CPC membership lapsed some time ago, I just signed up for the LPC just for that very reason.

I think Elon should run just for shits and giggles.
The party would deserve it for sure.
I'm asking this in all seriousness: WTF?

Exactly!
Maybe the NDP should elect a new leader right now. This might be one of “those” moments for them to fill the vacuum on the left? Singh isn’t the guy.

The Governor General would likely not allow a 're-prorogation' without the new PM testing the confidence of the House.

How does JT'S resignation change the calculus for the CPC?
