Dispatch from the Front Lines: A nice break, or a calm before a storm?
It's suddenly pretty quiet out there.
Happy Sunday, Line readers. We’re delighted to report that Line editor Gerson has returned safe and sound to Canada after a week in the Middle East. She’s going to spend the next day or two doing laundry, napping and collecting all her notes from the field, and we’ll get some content for you all published here ASAP. We will also be monitoring the U.S. election this week, and Line editor Gurney will have something to help keep you all occupied on that front on Tuesday, as we wait for the results. But all and all, it was actually a fairly quiet week in the news. And this dispatch is going to reflect that a bit. We welcome the break, to be honest. We suspect you might as well.
But that doesn’t mean we have nothing to say. And the first thing we want to say is that we hope you’ve had a chance to check out the latest episode of The Line Podcast. It was a different format than usual, due to Jen’s absence, but so far, the feedback has been overwhelming positive. Check it out and let us know what you think — we are absolutely hoping to do more regular, conventional interviews on our podcasts soon. We just need to make the financial side work! We’re on it, don’t worry!
As always, the audio version of the podcast (along with a bunch of ways to subscribe to it) can be found here. Please help us out, as always, by liking, subscribing, leaving reviews, etc. And! Tell your friends about us! Word of mouth is a huge part of our growth strategy.
And now, on with the dispatch.
All things considered, if we’re going to have a week with a relatively lighter dispatch, this ends up being a pretty good week. After an intense two months of political drama and speculation in Ottawa, our news was reasonably quiet this week — at least on the federal level. We don’t know if this is the calm before some storm or if our leading lights in the national capital have finally exhausted themselves for a while. But this felt like the first week since Labour Day where we weren’t constantly dodging barrages of nonsense.
That’s not to say that nothing happened. There are a couple of things we want to flag for you. But before we get to those, we wanted to note that things have settled down a bit. We don’t know how long it will last, but we welcome it. And we wonder a bit what it means.
