Dispatch from the Front Lines: It will happen here
One of these days you are going to open your favourite social media app and you’re going to be greeted by a flood of messages reporting on an in-progress massacre of Canadian Jews
Your Line editors were hoping for a much more casual Dispatch this weekend. Sadly, we woke up to headlines that we’ve been fearing were inevitable for some months now. Even after a shaky ceasefire has ended the most intensive fighting in Gaza, the widespread conflation of diaspora Jews with the actions of the Israeli state has well and truly taken hold. Predictably, we’re seeing it in an escalation of violent attacks against Jews against the world — this weekend, at a Hanukkah festival in Australia in which 15 are reported dead.
Meanwhile, here at home, politics will not abate despite the promised peace of the holidays. Another floor crossing has left the Liberals within striking distance of a majority.
All that on this weekend’s dispatch.
