Dispatch from the Front Lines: Let's get the basics fixed, eh?
Canada is filthy. Sabia hits the ground running.
We’re back! Miss us?
No better way to get back into the swing of things than by checking out the latest The Line Podcast. Or the latest On The Line, where Jen Gerson interviewed Paul Palango about the continuing aftermath of the 2020 Nova Scotia massacre.
We’ll be podcasting all summer long so please follow us on YouTube or your preferred podcasting app, and on our social media sites (find all of those at the bottom of this post).
But for now, let’s get into the dispatch.
Your Line editors are well aware of the cliché: the Canadian correspondent travels abroad and returns home wide-eyed and amazed by all they’ve seen. We’re going to avoid that kind of travelogue writing. But one of your Line editors has, in fact, just returned from two weeks in Europe — and he does have an observation to make.
Over the last two weeks, Matt Gurney has been bouncing around the Iberian Peninsula, visiting four cities in Spain and three in Portugal. It was a wonderful trip, and he can’t wait to go back. He especially recommends the seafood and the ancient Roman ruins. But one of the things he noticed — because even on holiday, he’s still a journalist, and literally cannot help himself — was the overall state of repair and public safety in every city he visited.
And friends, Canadian cities do not compare well.
