The "family" comment is important. When critics note that the refugees are getting a much warmer welcome than Arabs, Kurds, Pushtuns did, it's not merely that the refugees are "White". It's that they are next-door neighbours. Poland invaded and basically owned Ukraine, most of the country, for centuries. Every country around there has warred and moved borders, and done business, and made mixed families, for a thousand years.

An Polish/Ukraine analogy for Arabs would be Turkey, which ran an empire dominating Arabs for many centuries. Arabs found an easier welcome, I think, in Turkey, a much more popular destination for them than Europe was. Much more so than other Arabs, usually. In 2015, Turkey had taken in 1.9M refugees, Egypt, 115,000, though they are equidistant from Damascus.

I've read so many belly-button gazing articles from Canada and the USA where the goal of the author is to "shatter the gender binary". I wonder how those authors will react to the decree that men must stay and fight, while women can leave.
