There is nothing I look forward to more than the end to to your “obviously-there-are-valid-grievances-solved-only-by-doing-the-same-thing-but-harder” rants.
Looking forward to a return to the journalism that made me a subscriber.
I realize my post sounds snarky, Jenn. For that I apologize. I do not really intend it that way. Just trying to say that this topic has taken up so much bandwidth, that I look forward to you going back to what you (and the line) do best.
Could not agree more. I would add stop with the needlessly aggressive and dismissive adjectives that sadly are intended to pillory and vilify about a quarter of the Province’s population. Mainstream media and CBC do enough of a hatchet job addressing their target audience. Those who fund and generally and genuinely respect alternative media, seek “Journalism” over vitriol and respect diversity of opinion.
I wish there was also a "dislike" button at the end of the rant. I am so tired of opinion writers who have to lard every sentence with pejorative adjectives and derogatory put downs.
Would it be so difficult to write about the current highly emotional topics (Trump, Alberta Sepratists, stupid Conservatives) with clear thinking and logic and balance, and less emotional bloviating?
I'm sticking around for now, but I'm getting closer to crossing out The Line.
I’m not so sure it was all about just that one question. What about the other nine which got lost in all the angst about the separation question. The answers we get from them will be just as important from the perspective of asking Albertans to voice their thoughts on a number of very a critical issues not least of which is what to do with the senate. The separation thing may become background noise for a while but it’s likely wishful thinking to think it’s going to go away.
Most of those questions are symbolic and Alberta won’t have the power to do anything about them. Also not a clear mandate on many of them so Smith will do what she wants like daylight savings time. But that’s fine because the other provinces likely dont want to reopen the constitution anyways and I sure don’t trust smith to lead any change. I’m surprised that as many people
Voted yes actually because I don’t think smiths approval and trust is that high.
Thanks for your opinions. Good points for which you’re allowed to have your opinions which may differ from mine but then wasn’t to some extent that was what it was all about - seeking Albertans opinions? Asking instead of telling.
This is a great day for Alberta and a great day for Canada. Congratulations! It will be so fun to watch the UCP self-destruct in the coming days, months and years, as it is, unequivocally a separatist party with some federalists mixed in. All the rage from the spectacular loss on this vote will likely perpetuate more victimhood. Hopefully the separatists can accept the result and move on, move away, or start a legitimate separatist party. Any of those would be great. Happy Canada - Day!
Be careful what you wish for. Looking at socialist values exemplified by the current BC premier dancing on the graves of Canadian heroes to gain points with his supporters is not something I would wish on Albertans.
Yeah, it’s people’s fear of splitting the vote and thinking they’ll settle for “good enough” rather than what they don’t want. But I think that belief only benefits the party who has lost support and people need to see through it and vote how they want rather than voting against a party.
The only solution to this issue is a proper “refederation” of Canada with equal representation in the senate, parliament, proper judicial appointments ( not political) and a re draft of the equalization formula. Until that happens the issue only grows stronger
As soon as Canada embarks on serious Constitutional change- including Parliamentary seat distribution, Senate appointments, the flawed Equalization Formula, and the continued vitiating of Provincial spheres of influence as delineated in the BNA Act.
Separatist support isn't even as high as the referendum outcome seems to indicate: an Abacus poll conducted last week indicates that only about 1/3 of those intended to vote for the "Leave" option actually want separation. The rest view it as a protest against Ottawa or leverage in negotiations between the province and the federal government.
What about the bribe-taking UCP? The ones with the corrupt health care contracts? The ones wasting Albertans' money on everything from crappy tylenol to stupid referendum questions? Throw the provincial bums out now.
To be fair the early election call in BC is also an example of political self interest over the best interests of the people . Jen in two years Quebec is planning a referendum . Please consider rereading this article then and comparing the stay vs leave percentages although the results will be the same I would expect a closer to 50% result. Also the time and money spent by the media and Federal politicians promoting the stay choice would be of interest. I would imagine if you then wrote an article about the results you would not describe the leave voters in such hurtful terms, you seem to think farmers and Christians are bad people. I myself am very happy with the results and am pro Canada.

Hear, hear!!
Well said, Jo.

like you said, aren't there more important topics?
I fully agree no need for name calling and put downs
Apologies that you find credible journalism unpalatable.

Not looking forward to a probable NdP win though. I hope the Tories get themselves organized enough to be a real opposition to the UCP.
Agree that would be awesome. Big hill to climb for them but I think that would be perfect

Equal by population density?
“or, heck, maybe find itself enmeshed another moral panic over magic ostrich eggs or something.”
Nice; because that is what sixty-years of Western Discontent is all about, right?
Doesn’t the Prime Minister’s shoes need polishing or something, Jen?
Yes, Jen.
As soon as Canada embarks on serious Constitutional change- including Parliamentary seat distribution, Senate appointments, the flawed Equalization Formula, and the continued vitiating of Provincial spheres of influence as delineated in the BNA Act.
Chinada will never have serious constitutional change because the plan was to colonize Alberta from DAy one.
PEI has 4 senators - one for every 50 thousand people
ALBERTA HAS 1 Senator for every 800 THOUSAND PEOPLE
- the fix was in 120 years ago. I hope people wake up before they all die waiting for surgery https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/article/more-than-23000-canadians-died-on-medical-wait-lists-in-the-past-year-new-report-finds/
You are preaching to the choir, Brother.
Came just to watch the whiner parade.
Did not disappoint, looking forward to more.
So well said, Jen Gerson. Thank you!

On top of that, you can guarantee that every diehard seppie voted, and a whole lot of normies going about their daily life may not have bothered.
Your spicey, unslept comments with David Common this morning were amazing. THANK YOU for saying ot out loud and demanding it. Amazing! ❤️
Excellent article. Thank you and thank you Alberta for being sensible.
Hopefully the energy can now be placed to protecting our country, our sovereignty and making Canada better for all.
Ottawa STILL needs to be sent the message that Canadians are very weary of THIER corruption.

Murray, what corruption are you referring to here? I am just wondering.

While I respectfully disagree with your conclusion as to the referendum, I really like the way you constructed your post.
Well done, Simon.
Unfortunately separatists will continue to work towards the destruction of Canada. We haven't heard the last from them.

Chinada is mRdering the people by criminal neglect and you are worried about "separatists"?
