Your first sentence is consistent with your thesis. The second not so much. Evil or good is the same everywhere. And it’s easier to fight evil (if that’s what you truly believe) before it gets to your shores. A PQ majority will scare Ottawa into massive concessions. And encourage Albertans to do the same.
I also don’t think Quebec is really sending a message when they’re clearly saying we wouldn’t have a vote in these times. But at least Quebec politicians are doing it the honest way - through a democratic election. Separatists haven’t been able to get anyone elected who runs on a platform of being a separatist. I don’t see that changing in AB. Besides, the separatist movement was always going to eventually eat their own. We’re at the beginning stages of that so we shall see how that ends up.
I think you are wrong for the following reasons: first of all, Quebec has successfully used the threat of separation over and over and over again to wrench concessions from the rest of Canada. I don’t think that is being honest.
Secondly, one of the reasons the “Stay” folks use scare tactics and cudgels like the hysterical “vassal state” argument is that they really have no argument other than “it will be hard”. Many Albertans are like me, I suppose; I live in a riding that only votes Liberal. The denizens of “London Centre”, London, Ontario would vote for a burnt out stump painted red. My vote doesn’t count- never will- and never has.
Canada- and Canadians- abandoned me a long time ago. It took a long period of time, but I finally accepted the fact.
My point is, I suppose, that would exactly do folks expect Albertans to endure? How hard and how long are Albertans willing to work to support the lifestyles, consumption, and leisure of the Rest Of Canada?
Quebec separatists have been able to get elected on their platform in the past. And lost their objective by what would be called a statistically insignificant margin.
Wow!! Strongly worded and amazing! It’s been obvious to anyone watching the separatist leaders have been grifting bozos the entire time, the recent legal digraces of Rath, Mohdry and Deer are telling. Is it not treason to meet with a foreign government to work out a deal to break up a country? Is that not illegal?
The US would take the state of AB over in less than 48h if it separated. Thank goodness this movement will fail miserably.
I also like the Puerto Rico comment. Take a quick trip to PR and see how you like the view from the trunk of 1949 Chevy because that the view a separate Alberta will ultimately have.
The anger/irritation/borderline rage that comes across in this is something I appreciate. I have family that are separatists and really, I have come to see them as just following the latest thing and not really understanding much about the bigger picture. The proverbial night your own nose off to spite your face.
What’s richer is that Britain is now having conversations about trying to rejoin the EU. You’d think maybe the separatists might realize that the expense of separation isn’t necessarily good for most people.
“Most of them are just grifters out to make a few bucks on rage bait crowdfunding.”
Well then, Jen, you have nothing about which to worry, do you?
Your appalling language does not make up for the weakness of your argument. Please accept that as it is offered.
If 51 per cent of Albertans support a vote to consider the idea of a referendum, are you seriously suggesting that would not change the dynamic between the West and the federal government?
Sixty or eighty years of what you describe as poor treatment by the federal government did not just happen in eleven years; I remember talking about Western Discontentment a very long time ago.
It is real, it is not imagined, and the can should not be kicked for another generation to suffer.
Neither should one stoop to scare tactics that one cannot back up properly with facts. Emotion won’t do it this time, Jen; folks have seen that con before.
I am not suggesting for a moment that you are being disingenuous or untruthful; but there are many problems in this Country that are not being addressed, and that hasn’t changed with the election of a “new” government.
I genuinely hope that Albertans choose to stay within Canada; yet, every day that passes, I understand better why they may not.
Prime Minister “Fancy Socks” and Alberta’s current Premier are very similar. Narcissists who in pursuit of retaining political power, are willing to throw the very system that brought them into power under the bus.
To rid themselves of “Fancy Socks” some federal Liberals decided to “grow a pair”, remembering they were a party and not a cult. I do not have confidence that it will happen provincially. Smith is a political opportunist whose luck is running out. There is no floor for her to cross. The UCP is a den of vipers and she is the ringmaster. Perhaps podcasting is in her future?
Your comment about Alberta being thrown a couple of pipelines to keep us quiet, over simplifies the issue. While sockboy did do the west dirt vis a vis our major industry, will a couple of pipelines solve the overriding issues of rep by pop, judicial appointments, an unrepresentative senate, and yes, control of immigration and equalization? Pretty easy to throw out a few crumbs to keep the peasants from noticing that if it's not decided in Ottawa or Montreal it doesn't happen.
I thought Alberta wanted all the rights and privileges of Puerto Rico? Seriously, what's in it for the US to give Alberta statehood?
How many answers would you like?
Well said Jen. Spot on!
Quebec is on the verge of “sending a message”. What are your thoughts on that one?
I think it's stupid for all the same reasons. Also, I'm not in Quebec. JG

You make a good point.
A separation movement in Quebec could have the same effect as all those points brought up in your message wouldn’t it?

The entire Alberta separatist movement would go to virtually zero overnight if they could stop hemorrhaging $$ to Quebec.
