That was an interesting discussion on cybersecurity. One of the things that's struck me is there hasn't actually been a lot of news about Iranian cyber attacks, which raises the question of whether they're holding back or whether their capabilities simply aren't what they were touted to be. Not sure I'm still the wiser, although we know about the Israeli attacks on Iran because Israel wanted us to know about them - information security is always a consideration in war, and just because we haven't heard, it doesn't mean they're not happening.
I also had to raise an eyebrow at the assertion that North American vehicle systems are "horrendously insecure." I know something about this area, as responsibility for product cybersecurity is part of the group I run at work. The industry as a whole got a wake-up call over a decade ago when cyber researchers were able to remotely disable a Jeep by exploiting a weakness in the vehicle infotainment system. Since then, there's been a lot of focus on this area including development of the ISO/SAE 21434 standard for road vehicle cybersecurity. Europe has also implemented Regulation 155 for vehicle cybersecurity as a mandatory part of vehicle type approval. Most of the attacks out there are still hackers getting access to corporate servers and stealing information, not disabling vehicles. Those disabling attacks are possible in some cases, but are normally going to require physical access to the vehicle to access the CAN network rather than be a vulnerability in a wireless access point.
