On The Line: The last straight women discuss ...

Jen Gerson sits down with Toronto writer Phoebe Maltz Bovy, who has just completed her new book on gender norms, dating in the online world, and much more.

In the latest episode of On The Line, host Jen Gerson sits down with Toronto writer Phoebe Maltz Bovy, who has just completed her new book The Last Straight Woman. Together, they dive headfirst into what Phoebe jokingly calls “the Discourse” — the current state of heterosexuality in a post-#MeToo, post-dating-app world.

Jen and Phoebe dig into everything from sexual harassment and “cosplay oppression” to the growing social anxiety around age gaps, modern marriage norms, the romanticization/stigmatization (depending on who’s talking) of single motherhood, and why it has somehow become borderline embarrassing for straight women to simply be straight women. No subject is off-limits in this conversation, and Phoebe brings both sharp analysis and a sense of humour to the sometimes-chaotic landscape of contemporary gender and dating politics.

You can keep up with Phoebe Maltz Bovy’s work through her writing online and in her upcoming book The Last Straight Woman.
