Anyone who has been following this, seen this coming. This isn't a Canadian talent issue. This is Hockey Canada's fault. That good ol boy club has got to go.
The same thing happened with the world juniors. Where the hell were the proper defenseman on that roster?
Canadian hockey players are still the best in the world. Don't panic. The problem is Hockey Canada. This organizational flaw is self inflicted and can be fixed.
Hopefully this shit show will provide the necessary impetus.
Agreed. Out of the ashes comes new ideas and new energy. Creative destruction. Just like our country, they need a kick in the rump to get things sorted and catch up to the current state of play. Complacency is our Achilles heel right now. We’ll see if this horrifying loss does the trick or if they need more. Yikes.
They need to do something to get together and back on track. I gave up watching after the second period. How many offsides and icing calls do they need to get the message?
Great to see some sports coverage on the line. I think the introduction of PWHL and having an older roster is likely a major culprit for the gap. I also wonder if we are behind, in part, due to the COVID mandates stifling development for the younger players. It would be interesting to compare and contrast the differences for the players in the US and Canada from 2020-2023. Were the American players able to get ice time, games, training ect and the Canadian young players were largely shut out from playing?
I struggle with the canadian hockey mentality that we have to win every single tournament or its time to blow up the system. The world caught up, will never win them all anymore.
Scott I recall the gnashing of teeth and national flagellation after the 72 Summit Series with the USSR.
Prior to that it was arrogantly assumed that, when able to put our best players on the ice (Olympic competition didn't allow for professional players), Canada was miles ahead of the rest of the world.
This was the wake up call as well as the impetus (to Cherry's chagrin 🧐) for the general introduction of non-North American players in the NHL.
Significant efforts went into working to reclaim and establish Canadian men's hockey supremacy over the next 40+ years.
Hopefully the current situation is seen by Hockey Canada as the need to review and revise programs and processes.
Fingers crossed that those maple leaf adorned jerseys are fired up, with or without Poulin, in the medal round! Go Canada 🇨🇦!
Bingo. There was a Globe and Mail article on the different approaches between Team USA and Team Canada at the grassroots level (I'm paraphrasing and my apologies if I got this wrong - Team USA hockey is involved at the grass roots, using hockey camps etc to identify promising hockey players and moving them up the ranks (eg: high school, NCAA hockey etc). Team Canada's strategy? MIA

My wife and I regularly watch PWHL games. It's damned good hockey.

I don't come to The Line for sports commentary. Less of this, please.
