....OR, and hear me out here, maybe it will all be fine.
Canadians may be shocked to find that we are fairly alone in having this mania of hanging on every syllable of every word Orange Man Bad utters, either taking what he says FAR too seriously, or alternatively parsing it for hidden or secret meanings.
It is a national obsession, and it is NOT helping us.
The rest of the world finds Trump to be rude, arrogant, and more than a tad amusing in his outrageous crassness. They shake their heads more than anything else.
My prediction is that this Olympics is going to be just another Olympics.
And Trump is right about Europe over run by immigrants...specifically Sweden, UK, Belgium, Germany, France...... Even the Europeans admit it.... And Europe (and Canada) haven't carried their share of the load with NATO......Presidents going back to Bush have complained about it, Trump is being more forceful.....and Trump is as you state rude and arrogant.......and a narcissists .....and shoots his mouth off about things he has no idea about... But on some things he is right.
A couple of observations. The handover that will take place at the end of the Games will be to the next host of the Winter Olympics, not the summer games.
Second, Professional athletes taking a political stand before their events is a lot different than Olympic athletes taking one, the vast majority who have amateur status; they don’t have huge bank accounts and salaries to fall back on. Amateur athletes need to win that shiny piece of metal that is the right colour to achieve fame and fortune, no one remembers second place so they will be more than likely be focusing on winning. Maybe then they will use the platform, but maybe not.
I would be very interested to hear what the Venezuelan athlete has to say, given that a large majority of his fellow countryman who live outside of Venezuela applauded Trump removing Maduro.
Maybe political commentators should refrain from imposing politics on the Games and cheer the athletic accomplishments. It’s a chance to forget all the bullshit in the world for two weeks while we watch some of the best athletes in the world do their thing.
I find myself surprised that LA, the hairiest part of the armpit of the US (CA), will be able to properly host the olympics with all the trouble we hear about. Between fires, homelessness, and lawlessness, I guess it will be an adventure.
As Peter says below, the IOC is as corrupt as FIFA. It has massive issues inthat it's own research shows by 2040, there will be 10 countries on Earth that can host snow events. There aren't many more than that that can afford to host the summer ones. I think any American politician they're stupid enough to put on the big screen will be booed mercilessly. I hate that there are countries that cheat to win. I hate that there are judged sports.
BUT, for the next 17 days starting tomorrow afternoon, it's about the kids. It's about the thousands of hours of work, the injuries, the recovering from injuries, and those who are injured training at the Games. It's about the heart, the work, the determination and the massive sacrifices these kids, who are mature beyond their years, have shown to get to the Olympics. That in itself is a huge accomplishment.....and something to celebrate. The energy of youth is a glorious and powerful force. Everything for a chance to have race day be their day. That is the magic of the Olympics. And for 17 days, I don't care at all about the noise. I will sit, stand, pace, chew my fingernails, all in awe of the talent, effort and heart these kids will display.
The shit can start again in March, when we start talking about what a lcusterfck the AL games will be. Today, I just don't care.
The IOC is a corrupt organization filled with internal rot and bandit bureaucrats. Not at all surprising that politics would be a part of the mix.
The IOC competes with FIFA in the race to the bottom. Perhaps the IOC will confer a "Peace Prize" on a former POTUS?
I'll choose ICE shoots someone for 1000 please, Alex
Won't happen. The US can't afford an international incident.
Just because they can’t afford it doesn’t mean they have the discipline to not do it…
I don't think it's the new hires going over.....there were some competent people in ICE before it went full Gestapo.
The 2 who shot Pretti were both with ICE for close to or over 5 years, for the record.
Ironic since they're what ICE would pick up, but a valid point.

Quite right. The English consider "moaning" as a national pastime Ours would be "whining", if we had a nation...
