The 1938 World Cup took place during Spanish civil war. 82 was held almost coincidental with the Falklands war. 86 was on the heels of 10,000 dead in Mexican earthquake. 98 was during Balkans war, etc. the lack of enthusiasm was evident in Toronto (less so in Vancouver) long ago but I agree ticket pricing was appalling. They are now selling for $20 in Mexico. I got one for the opener in Toronto for $88 where I can watch Torontonians cheer for Italy
Love the game, despise the entity of FIFA. In line with the despots of the IOC, FIFA's complete lack of respect for the hosting taxpayer and it's impending failure will ensure it remains where it belongs, elsewhere. The economic and cultural benefits of a North American World Cup experiment will find its rightful resting place this summer.
Maybe we don’t like it but geopolitical events will influence geoathletic events. Didn’t Adolph Hitler inaugurate the XI Olympiad summer games in Berlin as a huge propaganda opportunity?
