Just finished listening. On the subject of disappointed Canadian Jews, Carney's speech was vintage liberal strategy of 'forming a committee' to study a controversial topic. The Liberals (and to some extent the Conservatives but nowhere near the Liberals) are not necessarily taking a stand but will take a stand if necessary.
Bafflegab. But it seems to work for the Liberals.
Good on The Line for calling out this spineless and pathetic attempt to make Jews feel safe. They are trying to look like they are taking this seriously and what surprises me is how the Liberals must have used political math for that statement.
For me, what should have been said was, 'if you want to live in this country, leave your blatantly open antisemitic hatred toward Jews at the door. Effective immediately, you will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Get out of Jewish neighborhoods effective immediately. Etc, etc, etc. ''

This should not surprise us. Canada rarely takes a stand on anything but is an exceptional nation of sounding like it does. Canada likes to be governed from the center. It's convenient for politicians because they don't have to take a stand anymore, they just need to sound like they do.
The strategy is typical: emote support for Israel by not saying words 'leave our jews alone. If you don't, you will be arrested.' (And deported if possible.)

We have absolutely talked about Carney's vibes, and we'll continue to talk about Carney's vibes, but I'm not obligated to take seriously a suggestion it's all we talk about in a podcast that also discussed, at equal length, his specific failure on the antisemitism file, and spent almost as long on the latest from Alberta.
You're not obligated to do anything. But given the state of media investigation into "What is actually getting done?" federally it'd be nice if SOME media had some thoughts.
I think it's a fully fair criticism that even the Line's analysis has, with the rest of Canadian media, continued to weaken. And the last few podcasts/articles are signs of that. I'm a supporter of the Line because it's independent both financially and ideologically. But I think it's journalism has gotten worse, I think there's clear evidence for it, and I would like it to improve.

With respect to the conversation regarding Canada’s besieged Jewish community, I was surprised not so much at the content, but of that which was left out: namely, the NDP, and the Conservatives.
Specifically, I would have noted the absolute consistency of the positions of both Parties, and their respective relationship to that of the Liberal Party.
Pierre Poilievre has been on point with this file since the atrocities of October 7th. His speech in Calgary was everything that Mr. Carney’s was not. Where the Prime Minister was equivocal, the Opposition Leader was direct. Where the Prime Minister failed, Mr. Poilievre succeeded. Mr. Poilievre’s position is not causing caucus chaos.
The NDP, of course, has been consistent in its appalling antisemitism, its support of decidedly unCanadian values, and its perpetuation of the lies and libels that make Canada such fertile soil for antisemitism to fester.
I realize one cannot share every voice and every opinion in a podcast packed with other stories.
One of these Parties- with their abhorrent views- was in an alliance with the Liberal Party for several years.
The other of these Parties has stood up for Canadian values, refused the notion that the Israeli Prime Minister would be arrested if travelling to Canada, and has spoken out in synagogues, and temples across the Country.
Such a stark divide would seem to me, to be worthy of some mention.

1 - There must be no separation that's happened anywhere in the world. If Alberta can't make it with all the advantages, then obviously it has never worked. Anywhere.
2 - Join NORAD instead of NATO.
3 - Every damn time that fear is used as a weapon, my head translates to a battered spouse that is told, "It's a tough,scary world. You'll never make it. So shut up, take your beatings, and hand over money."

I would also point out that the Raj column made the point that Carney apparently doesn't want people whining to him without also bringing a proposed solution to whatever they are whining about. I guess not - FFS, anybody being paid $75k a year has to know you don't whine to the boss without bringing some form of a solution to the table, too. (On a related front I welcome Matt or Jen's thoughts on the journalistic propriety of the media not revealing the 13 signatories of last week's anonymous letter.)
And yeah, Carney's speech was weak (don't even get me started on this bloody inclusion council and worse still, the leadership and composition of this council). Matt's 100% right - this was totally Junior-like, right down to, among other things, failing to call out the non-citizens engaging in law-breaking, all of whom should be arrested and then deported upon conviction (along with every other non-citizen convicted of breaking the law).
I think we have enough evidence to conclude that Carney delegates anything on the social policy side. He's the opposite of Trudeau who famously phoned in anything on the economic policy side.
I think there was some thoughtful commentary and intellectual arguments made in this podcast. Unfortunately, my big takeaway is having She Bangs in my head for the last hour and it will likely return anytime I see Carney for the next month. Thanks Matt.

The thrust of the weekend retreat was “Who gets better results? The manager who yells and berates, or the confident, competent leader who sets the temperature, and gets out of the way?”
It was the notion that the yeller and screamer always hits budget, but, properly done, the engaging, inclusive, positive, and respectful manager can blow far beyond budget.
Mr. Carney may suffer from “short man syndrome” and feels he has to compensate with volume for his lack of stature.
The Diminutive Darling of Davos may find that those same MPs at whom he spills his vitriolic bile, will just step over his carcass when the going gets tough. None would bother to pee on his head if his hair were on fire.
Think about the feckless progressive Liberal losers that are likely accusing Carney of “yelling.” Alumni Presidents of university student councils every one of them, and/or friends of our dear Stephen Guilbeault.
I guarantee the more competent members of the Liberal caucus don’t even register Carney as “yelling,” or certainly don’t take offense to it. A) I was surprised to hear JG and MG say what they did so explicitly. They are dangerously bang on with the idea and the impact assessment.
B) I would add on if they included the option to provide work permits for all employees of relocating companies, and also those people holding tickets in skilled trades - the effect would be even more dramatic and acute to Canada.

On AB separatism and not debating conspiracy theorists. I disagree with JG here. When you come armed with facts and receipts to a conspiracy theorist, to objective observers of the conversation, you come out looking strong, competent and informed. It strengthens you and your argument, especially if they respond with “no it’s not.” When you decline to debate them - you just look like you have something to hide and only give credibility to their argument. Sam Harris is dead wrong here, and his view should not be promoted. In fact I think this is precisely why you’re (initially) starting to see support for separatism declining. The rubber is starting to hit the road. And the conversation is starting to get real. People like to beat up on Premier Smith, but she has both the bully pulpit and the credibility to effectively take on separatism better than almost anyone. From what I’ve seen so far, how she is approaching it is absolutely bang on. Surprised she’s getting zero credit from “The Line” (ahem JG) for her actions and statements here since the referendum on a referendum was called… and before I get she “shouldn’t have called it.” Yes she should have. The time was right for the fight, and allowing the courts to shut this thing down would have been akin to throwing a match into a pool of gasoline.
There are many points that could be refuted by the separatists but they are both so bad at their task and so narcissistic that they won't ask anyone else for help that they just keep on getting beat up.

If the Conservatives merely wanted to win, they would have chosen Jean Charest as leader.
We don’t “just want to win” for the sake of winning; we actually want to win to effect substantive change.

Where the Prime Minister was equivocal, the Opposition Leader was direct. Where the Prime Minister failed, Mr. Poilievre succeeded. Mr. Poilievre’s position is not causing caucus chaos.
The NDP, of course, has been consistent in its appalling antisemitism, its support of decidedly unCanadian values, and its perpetuation of the lies and libels that make Canada such fertile soil for antisemitism to fester.
I realize one cannot share every voice and every opinion in a podcast packed with other stories.
One of these Parties- with their abhorrent views- was in an alliance with the Liberal Party for several years.
The other of these Parties has stood up for Canadian values, refused the notion that the Israeli Prime Minister would be arrested if travelling to Canada, and has spoken out in synagogues, and temples across the Country.
Such a stark divide would seem to me, to be worthy of some mention.

It's the 1st time I've considered skipping NATO and having Alberta choose NORAD. So thanks for that. The main points that won't solve themselves on being persuaded to stay in Canada...
1 - There must be no separation that's happened anywhere in the world. If Alberta can't make it with all the advantages, then obviously it has never worked. Anywhere.
2 - Join NORAD instead of NATO.
3 - Every damn time that fear is used as a weapon, my head translates to a battered spouse that is told, "It's a tough,scary world. You'll never make it. So shut up, take your beatings, and hand over money."
4 - For those who bring up a huge price tag... If only Separation happened before the Liberals threw us into unimaginable debt. And Alberta will save so much money by not putting tampons in men's military washrooms and all sorts of DEI / Net Zero / Virtue Signaling.
It's beyond sad that swatches of geographical Liberals looked at our Federally-made damage. Or even didn't look. Either way, they voted the atrocities to continue under Liberal rule. Didn't care? Didn't care to think of all Canadians if the pain wasn't their own? We can't stay under Taxation Without Representation.

I mean, these gormless weasels (TM Matt) in the Liberal caucus just become more contemptible over time. If these progressive hacks had been properly yelled at as children they might not have grown up to become progressive hacks or the type to whine about being yelled at. I would also point out that the Raj column made the point that Carney apparently doesn't want people whining to him without also bringing a proposed solution to whatever they are whining about. I guess not - FFS, anybody being paid $75k a year has to know you don't whine to the boss without bringing some form of a solution to the table, too. (On a related front I welcome Matt or Jen's thoughts on the journalistic propriety of the media not revealing the 13 signatories of last week's anonymous letter.)
And yeah, Carney's speech was weak (don't even get me started on this bloody inclusion council and worse still, the leadership and composition of this council). Matt's 100% right - this was totally Junior-like, right down to, among other things, failing to call out the non-citizens engaging in law-breaking, all of whom should be arrested and then deported upon conviction (along with every other non-citizen convicted of breaking the law).
I think we have enough evidence to conclude that Carney delegates anything on the social policy side. He's the opposite of Trudeau who famously phoned in anything on the economic policy side.

With respect to the Prime Minister yelling at folks, I was reminded of training I did many years ago.
The thrust of the weekend retreat was “Who gets better results? The manager who yells and berates, or the confident, competent leader who sets the temperature, and gets out of the way?”
It was the notion that the yeller and screamer always hits budget, but, properly done, the engaging, inclusive, positive, and respectful manager can blow far beyond budget.
Mr. Carney may suffer from “short man syndrome” and feels he has to compensate with volume for his lack of stature.
The Diminutive Darling of Davos may find that those same MPs at whom he spills his vitriolic bile, will just step over his carcass when the going gets tough. None would bother to pee on his head if his hair were on fire.
Think about the feckless progressive Liberal losers that are likely accusing Carney of “yelling.” Alumni Presidents of university student councils every one of them, and/or friends of our dear Stephen Guilbeault.
I guarantee the more competent members of the Liberal caucus don’t even register Carney as “yelling,” or certainly don’t take offense to it. Sounds like lots of commentary and opinion to this effect out their Caucus in the aftermath of the original story. G&M has a great follow up. That frankly, makes me like Carney even more.

Very generous speculation about the specifics of Mark Carney's context and motivation for telling off his caucus members is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this podcast session. Wasn't Justin Trudeau also a complete authoritarian asshole who didn't tolerate any dissent? Maybe the new boss is also just a slightly different version of that?
Also, isn't it reported with grave and somber tones about "poor caucus management" whenever there is some rumor about Conservatives getting less than kid-glove treatment by party leadership? Why isn't this a positive for them as well? You see the narrative around Mark Carney isn't rational. The guy can do no wrong, because whatever he does is somehow deemed to be correct at least for as long as he does it. If you or I or really anyone had access to the alien reality-warping machine he seems to possess, we could be PM as well.
On Carney “yelling.” The G&M has a great follow up article from Walsh and Stephanie Levitz that I found very encouraging. I would hope, expect and applaud the cadre of feckless progressive losers still in the Liberal caucus feeling uncomfortable under focused competent leadership (not trying to sound like a Carney fanboy here, but there are some encouraging things in this G&M article).
On American tactics for potentially gutting and leaving Canada truly vulnerable to annexation.
A) I was surprised to hear JG and MG say what they did so explicitly. They are dangerously bang on with the idea and the impact assessment.
B) I would add on if they included the option to provide work permits for all employees of relocating companies, and also those people holding tickets in skilled trades - the effect would be even more dramatic and acute to Canada.
C) the fact no one in the American administration has figured any of this out has convinced me of their complete incompetence. They’ve taken the exact wrong approach to Canada instead. You could kill us with kindness so easily…
On AB separatism and not debating conspiracy theorists. I disagree with JG here. When you come armed with facts and receipts to a conspiracy theorist, to objective observers of the conversation, you come out looking strong, competent and informed. It strengthens you and your argument, especially if they respond with “no it’s not.” When you decline to debate them - you just look like you have something to hide and only give credibility to their argument. Sam Harris is dead wrong here, and his view should not be promoted. In fact I think this is precisely why you’re (initially) starting to see support for separatism declining. The rubber is starting to hit the road. And the conversation is starting to get real. People like to beat up on Premier Smith, but she has both the bully pulpit and the credibility to effectively take on separatism better than almost anyone. From what I’ve seen so far, how she is approaching it is absolutely bang on. Surprised she’s getting zero credit from “The Line” (ahem JG) for her actions and statements here since the referendum on a referendum was called… and before I get she “shouldn’t have called it.” Yes she should have. The time was right for the fight, and allowing the courts to shut this thing down would have been akin to throwing a match into a pool of gasoline.
There are many points that could be refuted by the separatists but they are both so bad at their task and so narcissistic that they won't ask anyone else for help that they just keep on getting beat up.
That, or they are just grifters and people hoping to get something out of Ottawa. I'm actually convinced that is the case.
As for the foreign interference folks, wouldn't it make more sense for China and Russia to keep Alberta weak by keeping it in Canada? Perhaps National unity is the goal of Russia, China and the USA?
It was about a year ago that The Line wished for the rising up of A-Hole Nation. Perhaps it has manifested in the form of our current Prime Minister and Liberal Party Leader Mark Carney.
The concept of asshole nation required that the country actually was able to get stuff done and it was the actions that made it and asshole, not speeches or yelling. Carney’s yelling, like his speeches, are just performance art to hide the fact not much is getting done and not much impact has been made.
