Hey Everybody!
Just a quick note from your Line Editors; we’re just wrapping up our Labour Day long weekend. Getting the kids back to school-ready, polishing the lunch boxes, taming feral summer hair — that kind of thing.
We wish were spending a lot less time paying attention to the news. Alas, this is difficult given a now-steady barrage of threats from the White House — the latest, some kind of threat from U.S. President Donald Trump who said Montreal-based airplane maker Bombardier wouldn’t be allowed to sell its planes in the U.S. unless it moved its plant. These kinds of comments are now coming so fast and furious, and are often so economically illiterate and unserious, that it’s becoming increasingly difficult for us to keep track of them all, much less take them seriously.
On our side of the border, we have news from the Peoples’ Republic of China that Canada has re-started some kind of military dialogue, which appears to be happening in parallel with a similar warming of relations between China and the United States. We’re not interested in adding too much to the anti-China critique at present, except to note — we really wish that Canadians were not receiving so much information about what’s actually happening in our government from foreign news outlets. The communications infrastructure and culture that exists at just about every level of government in this country has grown so sclerotic and risk averse that we’re not sure what’s left to advise beyond burning the whole thing to the ground and building it anew. Alas.
Anyway, we will have a lot to say about all the things this week, but in the meantime, we did want to wish you a happy Labour Day. Rest up. The cycle begins anew tomorrow.
