Why would our government ever tell us anything when the entire news media consistently gives it the benefit of the doubt?

The "trade war" is a perfect example. Two weeks ago, when negotiations broke down, journos were calling for the documents to be released.

Since then, Lutnick has said Carney is lying, no documents have been published, and the entire media has lined up behind Carney, conveniently burying their earlier questions.

What benefit would the govt get from transparency? Paying legacy media works much better.

Trust us! That always seems to work for the Liberals in Canada, accompanied with a complete absence of any accountability on any subject. We now share values with Qatar and are Strategic Partners with China and have an arrangement with Chinese police services that is so secretive, the public cannot be trusted with the content. Enjoy the weekend and yup this is the LPC’s Canada in a trade war with the US that is best described as Willful Blindness all around!

Liberals understand Canadians as they are, Conservatives as they want them to be. Liberals understand at heart Canadians are a resource extraction peasant people. We want to be led and taken care of. Carney is "daddy" to a not insignificant portion of the electorate.

Go ahead, tell me I am wrong.

LPC is the party of Central Canada and Ontario and Quebec believe they ARE Canada, the rest of the country is “the regions”! Refer to Democracy in Canada by Donald J Savoie, that outlines it in some academic detail. As a Canadian Engineer who has worked for Dutch, American, Mexican & Canadian companies, lazy peasants might describe a portion of the population, but that is not the resource extraction part of the economy, but refers to the regulatory and governing part of the country that impedes rather than facilitates the economic activity in Canada!

I never said lazy. Unambitious? Of course. But not lazy.

I agree that the government coms strategy needs work! On the other hand, Carney's press conferences tell us what we need to know, and do not “sell” rather than “tell.” Our mainstream media are U.S. owned for the most part, so of course they do not report factually. The CBC leaves me baffled. Very sad and pathetic deterioration.

Joanne, I truly hope that your second sentence was offered in sarcasm because if you are serious in that statement I respectfully disagree in absolute entirety.

As for our mainstream media being US owned, I certainly agree with you with respect to Postmedia Corp. Having said that, our broadcast media are Canadian owned, as are, oh, the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail and so forth. So, my request of you is for you to identify which of the major media other than Postmedia is US owned.

Ken, don't you know that "US Owned" is code for owned by outsiders who are bad people? It doesn't even matter if they are American or not at this point.

Roki, I think it is a bit more nuanced than your excellent analysis.

From my perspective, "US owned" represents "bad people" to some folks and therefore, in their minds, anyone or any organization who presents viewpoints contrary to their own fixed ideas is by definition "bad people" which, again, by definition, makes them "US owned."

So, no room for opinions other than those of the "good people."

For many Canadians the whole point of Canada is as a counterpoint to the American project.

Also for many the whole point of Canada are the benefits and free stuff. Without them surveys show pride would drop precipitously
