Dispatch from the Front Lines: This has been a terrible weekend. Enjoy your turkey.
Horror in Israel. C-11, another fiasco in the making. On a better CBC, and Canadian realism. And we hand out another Toronto Maple Leafs Award for Excellence in Governing, and to a prior winner!
This dispatch is obviously going to be very different than the one we set out to write. The shocking news out of the Middle East is obviously at the top of our minds, but as we have a few housekeeping items, we hope our readers will indulge as as we quickly clear the decks and then move onto the rest of what we have to say — the stuff we planned to talk about, and the stuff we very much didn’t.
First of all, as always, a reminder that these longer dispatches may not appear fully in your email clients. If you have any problem, please click through to our website, readtheline.ca, and read it there.
Second, for all of you waiting until the last minute to buy tickets to our upcoming in-person event in Toronto on October 18th, be advised that we sold a bunch suddenly this week, so if you want to come, don’t wait until the last moment. Get ‘em now. Find out more here.
Enjoy our video for this week, obviously recorded before the events overseas.

And now, on with the dispatch.
We had hoped to write a simple, to-the-point dispatch that covered some domestic issues and then wished everyone a happy Thanksgiving. That was before Hamas and probably other terror groups — at time of writing — pulled off a shockingly successful invasion of southern Israel. Skirmishes and bombardments are nothing new, of course, but this was a ground offensive that saw a considerable slice of Israeli territory occupied, including towns and even cities. At this time, the Israeli military is moving to retake the lost territory and restore order. Battles continue. The Israelis are also hitting targets inside Gaza, from where the attack originated. It appears, horrifyingly, that many Israelis were taken hostage, including children and many young women. We suspect we know why.
